閱讀理解

碰到難解的句子,耐心地反覆推敲,通常可以解通文意,但有時思考方向錯了,便可能陷入其中,不得其解。

David Harvey的Seventeen Contradictions and the End of Capitalism中,講第四個矛盾的一章有這一句:

Not only do we see around us abundant evidence of so many of the collapses that Polanyi feared, but a heightened sense of universal alienation looms ever more threatening, as more and more of humanity turns away in disgust from the barbarism the underpins the civilisation it has itself constructed.

最後三分之一句便使我想了好久。

首先,...the barbarism the underpins the civilisation it has itself constructed看來不合文法。我認為應該是...the barbarism that underpins the civilisation it has itself constructed。

但即使真的是這樣,我想來想去,還是無法理解其意思,因為我把it has itself constructed的it看成是the barbarism,結果當然想不通野蠻如何建立文明。

不得已請教一位高明的朋友,他說這個it是指humanity,並解釋了他理解的意思。

這樣我便明白了,這一句應該是說:人類一手建立起來的文明,竟然是靠一種野蠻狀態支撐,越來越多人對此深感厭惡。

至於何謂支撐文明的「野蠻狀態」,作者在這一章是在講資本的運作基於私有產權,而私人佔有和累積財富除了靠合法的自由市場交易外,還有一種很重要、我們如今視為違法的方式,也就是利用搶劫、偷竊、詐騙、貪污、高利貸、掠奪、暴力和強迫等手段,加上市場上各種可疑和不光彩的做法,例如壟斷、操縱、囤積,以及龐茲騙局等等。合法/正當的手段,與非法/不正當的手段有一種共生關係(symbiotic relation);巧取豪奪、剝削利用(包括剝削勞工、踐踏人性、殘害自然)正是資本的本質,我們不能一廂情願地對此視若無睹。

    然則,當 “it” 意指 humanity 這一點確定之後,那個“the” 是否應仍解讀為“that” ?

    1. 如果那個the不是that的誤植,我不知道要如何理解這一句。你怎麼看?

  2. 我遇到難解的部分,通常:
    1. 先放在一邊,繼續翻其他部分。弄明白上下脈絡後,原來難解的部分也就容易了。2. 直接聯絡作者問明白。現在用email聯絡很容易,而作者對於作品的翻譯正確與否,通常是很在意的。
