今天《明報》林沛理文章〈從浦志強到克魯格曼〉有這一句：「他〔Paul
Krugman〕為讀者提供一套監察政府和揭穿謊言的方法學（methodology）。」
林沛理寫中文文章，向來喜歡在某些名詞或名句後面加附英文，早年我覺得有趣，後來愈看愈覺得無聊。在上例中，加附英文大可不必，但更根本的問題是：「方法學」一詞用得恰當嗎？
兩年前，我曾碰到一名中國中小企業老闆，很喜歡把「方法學」掛在嘴邊，初時我覺得有趣，甚至有點佩服，心想：真不是個普通商人啊，還懂方法學呢！後來聽他講話多了，愈來愈不以為然，覺得他開口閉口「方法學」，根本是在裝樣子嚇唬人。
Methodology台灣譯「方法論」居多，如果你查我覺得相當好用的Wiktionary，它的解釋很清楚（中文是我加的）：

The study of methods used in a
field.（對某領域使用的方法之研究）
2.
(proscribed) A collection of methods,
practices, procedures and rules used by those who work in some
field.（某領領域的人使用的一套方法、常規和程序）
3.
The implementation of such methods
etc.（這些方法之實踐）
第一義是指方法學或方法論，第二義是指一套方法。有關方法學，我們可以看看維基百科較仔細的說明：
Methodology is the systematic, theoretical analysis of
the methods applied to a field of study. It comprises the theoretical analysis
of the body of methods and principles associated with a branch of knowledge.
Typically, it encompasses concepts such as paradigm, theoretical model, phases
and quantitative or qualitative techniques.
Wiktionary的第二義前面加註proscribed，那是指Some educators or other authorities
recommend against the listed usage（有些學者專家反對這個用法）。這一頁下面便有Usage notes（用法說明）：
Etymologically, methodology refers to the study of
methods. Thus the use of methodology as a synonym for methods (or other simple
terms such as means, technique, or procedure) is proscribed as both inaccurate
and pretentious.（究其詞源，methodology是指方法之研究。因此，有些學者專家認為把methodology當作「方法」使用，是不正確和做作的，建議不要這麼用。）
相似的例子是mythology
回覆刪除在所有研究論文中，永遠有一項叫 Methodology，是研究員描述用的（實驗）方法。所以在此，methodology = method。雖然 methodology 跟 method 有輕微分別，但此分別通常並不顯著。例如你以拍馬屁手段謀得升職，我向人嘲諷笑你 "I'm not quite sure I agree with his methodology"。嚴格存心要交碴，什麼叫 "not quite sure"？你連自己想什麼也不肯定嗎？阿諛奉承老細也不是［方法］，是手段。但我此句 100% 用得沒問題，信不信由你。

他〔Paul Krugman〕為讀者提供一套監察政府和揭穿謊言的方法學（methodology）====》 其實用得沒問題，因為他聰明只用了單字，而 methodology 在很多情況應用上是跟 method 通用的，雖然 methodology 包含了對整個 ［方法］之運用（包括 implications）有深層了解的更廣含義。［學者專家］認為不正確？要改正民間用法？大佬，學者出吓文章保住飯碗啫，認真你便。。。唉。
