Wonky

維基字典第二義:(chiefly UK, Australia, New Zealand) Feeble, shaky or rickety.  〔看到了沒有,不可靠這意思,主要是英國和澳紐在用,而《時代》是美國雜誌。〕

牛津字典(Of a thing) unsteady; shaky 〔看到了沒有,不穩、不可靠這意思,是用來講物件。〕

1. Shaky or unsteady: a wonky table.〔

而且,其實你查網路字典,也不難找到《時代》用的那個意思,例如Macmillan Dictionary,就有 behaving or looking like a wonk(主要是美國用法)的解釋(http://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/american/wonky#wonky_4)。如果你只會查英漢字典,又硬要和別人爭辯,那是很沒意思的。

  2. 閣下引出的The American Heritage Dictionary裡面提到wonky這個字有四個意思:
    won·ky (wŏngkē)
    Share:
    adj. won·ki·er, won·ki·est
    Chiefly British
    1. Shaky or unsteady: a wonky table.
    2. Out of alignment; crooked: "The door itself looked wonky somehow, not quite square with the building" (Steve Augarde).
    3. Not functioning properly or normally: wonky digestion; a wonky phone connection.
    4. Mentally unbalanced; crazy.
    前三個的確用在物體上,沒有問題,但閣下怎麼解釋第四個呢?
    Mentally unbalanced; crazy總不會是用在東西上的吧。

    1. 我不是說了嗎,一個單詞如何理解,當然要看文章的脈絡。你還可以從 urbandictionary.com 查到更多其他意思呢。

    3. to question man, Wonky這字在美國1990後就被當做work hard意思,去看看Macmillan Dictionary啦!!我貼在這文章後面。會不知做何解是因為我們不是美國人,查字典網路不夠用功。你查夠用功就會發現那不是解不穩固的意思。

  4. 了解一個詞的意思,當然要看上下文,兒不是靠字典。
    根據Time的文章:
Tsai gained a reputation for being wonky—the type who likes to debate protectionism over early-morning sips of black coffee or oolong tea.
    我比較認同如細的解釋:
But many Americans these days use both “wonk” and “wonky” to mean overly studious or obsessed with details – that is, wonkish or nerdy. [See update below.]

  5. 我覺得爭論翻譯的意思沒有太大意義,如果這個字是真心讚美小英,那小英這邊何不大方自稱wonky蔡,如果小英沒有這樣做,反而避而不談,請問小英內心自認wonky為何義呢?

  6. Macmillan Dictionary上有解示Wonky對於英美兩國定義不同:
大家可以谷歌;wonky definition and synonyms | Macmillan Dictionary

    英國定義:
British not straight, steady, or firmly in position
Not straight, upright or level:uneven, irregular, slanted.

    美國定義:
American behaving or looking like a wonk
Words used to describe someone who works hard

    Grammarist上的解釋上說明這為Wonky做為非常努力解為20世紀末美國人所創造的說法哦!
    Wonkish, wonky

The adjective wonky has two unrelated senses that are both used throughout the English-speaking world. Its older and more commonly used definition is unstable, defective, unreliable, or wobbly. For instance, a bad knee or a table with loose fittings might be called wonky, as might a person who behaves unpredictably. The word’s second sense is studiously concerned with minutiae. It connotes the kind of expertise that only a long-time insider within a given field can have, and it often comes up in politics, where a wonky person is one who is immersed in the details of policy.

Wonky in its second sense comes from the slightly older noun wonk, which emerged in the United States in the late 20th century as slang for a studious person concerned with minutiae.1 Wonk‘s origins are not known, however. Wonky in the first sense came about in the early 20th century, is British in origin, and has no corresponding noun,2 so it doesn’t appear that the two senses of wonky share a common origin.

Wonkish, also originally American, is synonymous with wonky in that word’s second sense, so it means concerned with minute details, studious, etc. It entered the language around 1990, about two decades later than the second sense of wonky, and perhaps represents an effort to avoid possible confusion caused by wonky‘s two unrelated definitions. Wonkish remains most common in the U.S., but has spread elsewhere over the last few years.

    2. 應該是含有拐彎抹角、含糊不清的書呆氣;不然直接用 wonkish,就不會有疑義。換言之,用字精準的採訪者。綠蠅的別再自慰、藍蛆也請於特別加上書呆。總之,wonky帶有含蓄的貶意!
